If the account is true, people may have crossed from one side of Babylon to the other without using a bridge or boat. They may have walked beneath the flowing Euphrates through a tunnel constructed thousands of years before modern underwater engineering became possible.

The story is known as the Euphrates Tunnel, and it has fascinated historians, archaeologists, and engineering enthusiasts for centuries. Some describe it as the world’s first underwater tunnel. Others consider it a legend that grew larger with every retelling.

The mystery remains unresolved because no confirmed physical remains of the tunnel have ever been discovered. Yet the ancient descriptions are detailed enough to raise an intriguing question: could the engineers of Mesopotamia really have built such a structure?

A Hidden Passage Beneath Ancient Babylon

Babylon was one of the most important cities of the ancient world. Located in Mesopotamia, near the Euphrates River in present-day Iraq, it became famous for its monumental architecture, religious importance, powerful rulers, and advanced urban planning.

The Euphrates was not simply a river passing beside Babylon. It was closely connected to the city’s life. It provided water, supported agriculture, enabled transportation, and helped shape the city’s layout.

Ancient accounts describe Babylon as extending across both sides of the river. Crossing the Euphrates would therefore have been an important part of daily movement. Boats and bridges could connect the two banks, but a tunnel beneath the water would have offered something very different: a protected route hidden from the river above.

According to later writers, this underground passage connected important areas of the city, possibly linking royal buildings or major districts on opposite sides of the Euphrates.

The idea sounds surprisingly modern. Today, underwater tunnels carry trains, cars, and pedestrians beneath rivers and seas. But the story of the Euphrates Tunnel suggests that ancient builders may have attempted a similar solution thousands of years ago.

The Ancient Writers Who Described the Tunnel

Most of what is known about the Euphrates Tunnel comes from writers who lived centuries after the structure was supposedly built.

The Greek historian Diodorus Siculus, writing in the first century BCE, described a tunnel beneath the Euphrates in his historical work Bibliotheca Historica. His account associated the project with Semiramis, a legendary queen credited with many enormous construction projects.

Another ancient writer, Philostratus, also referred to a passage beneath the river in his account of the life of Apollonius of Tyana. Although the details differ, the stories helped preserve the idea that Babylon once possessed an underground route beneath the Euphrates.

The problem is that neither writer witnessed the construction. Their accounts were based on earlier traditions, stories, and historical material that may already have been mixed with legend.

This does not automatically make the story false. Ancient writers often preserved valuable information that would otherwise have disappeared. However, it means that their descriptions must be examined carefully rather than accepted without question.

How Was the Euphrates Tunnel Supposedly Built?

The most remarkable part of the story is the method of construction.

According to the traditional account, the Euphrates River was temporarily diverted so workers could build the tunnel beneath its normal course. Once construction was completed, the river was allowed to flow over the finished structure.

The tunnel was reportedly built using strong brick masonry. Its walls were said to have been sealed with bitumen, a naturally occurring petroleum material that was widely used in ancient Mesopotamia.

Bitumen was valuable because it could help protect structures from water. Ancient builders used it in construction, waterproofing, and other practical applications. Its use in a river tunnel would therefore have been technically reasonable.

The passage was also described as large enough for people and possibly horse-drawn vehicles. Some accounts give its dimensions as approximately 12 feet high and 15 feet wide. Large bronze gates were reportedly placed at the entrances.

If these details were accurate, the tunnel would have been an extraordinary achievement. It would have required careful planning, skilled labor, water control, strong building materials, and a reliable method of preventing flooding.

Could Ancient Babylonian Engineers Have Done It?

The idea may sound impossible at first, but the people of ancient Mesopotamia were highly skilled builders and engineers.

For thousands of years, communities in the region developed irrigation systems, canals, embankments, drainage networks, and large brick structures. Managing water was essential to agriculture and urban life.

Babylon itself was known for major walls, temples, palaces, roads, and hydraulic works. The city’s builders understood how to work with mudbrick, fired brick, stone, timber, and bitumen.

Ancient Mesopotamian societies also had experience changing water channels and controlling river flow. Modern research continues to reveal the enormous scale of ancient canal systems across the region.

These achievements do not prove that the Euphrates Tunnel existed. However, they show that ancient engineers possessed knowledge that could make such a project theoretically possible.

The greatest challenge would have been controlling the river. Diverting the Euphrates, excavating beneath its bed, constructing a stable passage, and restoring the water flow would have required enormous resources.

It would not have been an ordinary construction project. It would have been a major state undertaking.

The Mystery of Queen Semiramis

The Euphrates Tunnel is most often linked to Queen Semiramis, one of the most famous and mysterious figures in ancient legend.

Semiramis was portrayed by classical writers as a powerful ruler, military leader, city builder, and creator of monumental works. Stories credited her with founding cities, constructing roads, building walls, and leading campaigns across vast territories.

Many historians believe the legendary figure was partly inspired by Shammuramat, a real Assyrian queen who lived during the ninth century BCE. Over time, stories about her may have expanded, transforming a historical queen into a larger-than-life character.

Because Semiramis became associated with so many great achievements, historians remain cautious when a major ancient construction project is attributed to her.

The tunnel may have been real but later connected to her name. It may have been based on a smaller structure that grew more impressive through storytelling. Or it may have been entirely legendary.

The truth is difficult to separate from the stories.

Why Has No Trace of the Tunnel Been Found?

The greatest challenge to the Euphrates Tunnel story is the lack of archaeological evidence.

Babylon has been studied and excavated for many years. Archaeologists have uncovered important remains, including temples, palaces, walls, roads, inscriptions, and other structures. Yet no confirmed remains of an underwater tunnel have been found.

This absence is significant, but it does not completely close the case.

Rivers change over time. Their channels shift, their banks erode, and layers of sediment accumulate. The Euphrates has changed its course in different periods, and parts of ancient Babylon have been affected by flooding, groundwater, rebuilding, and human activity.

If a tunnel once existed, it may now be buried beneath deep layers of sediment or located outside the areas that have been fully investigated.

It is also possible that the structure collapsed or was destroyed long ago. Ancient brick can deteriorate when exposed to water and changing environmental conditions.

Still, without physical evidence, historians cannot describe the Euphrates Tunnel as a proven engineering achievement.

History, Exaggeration, or Complete Legend?

The mystery may not have only two answers.

The tunnel does not necessarily have to be either a perfectly documented structure or a completely invented story. There may be a middle possibility.

Perhaps a smaller underground passage existed near the river and was later described as a much larger tunnel. Perhaps builders created a covered crossing that was eventually transformed into a story of an enormous underwater route.

Ancient stories often changed as they were repeated. Real events could become more dramatic, rulers could receive credit for projects they never built, and impressive structures could grow in size through legend.

Babylon itself became a symbol of wealth, power, and architectural wonder. Writers may have added extraordinary details because audiences expected Babylon to be a city of impossible achievements.

The story of the Euphrates Tunnel may therefore contain a historical memory, even if its surviving descriptions are not completely accurate.

Was It the World’s First Underwater Tunnel?

The Euphrates Tunnel is sometimes called the world’s first underwater tunnel, but that title must be used carefully.

If the ancient account is accurate, the structure would have existed thousands of years before modern underwater tunnels. It would represent an astonishing example of early engineering.

However, because the tunnel has not been confirmed archaeologically, it cannot be treated as a definite historical fact.

The first underwater tunnel known with strong modern documentation was the Thames Tunnel in London, completed in the nineteenth century. Its construction involved major engineering innovations and is supported by extensive records.

The Euphrates Tunnel remains different. It belongs to the uncertain space between ancient history and legend.

That uncertainty is exactly what makes the story so compelling.

Why the Legend Still Matters

Even if the tunnel is never found, the story remains valuable.

It reveals how ancient people imagined great cities and celebrated engineering achievements. It also reminds us that early civilizations were capable of sophisticated planning and large-scale construction.

Modern audiences sometimes underestimate ancient technology because it lacked machines, electricity, and modern materials. Yet ancient societies built enormous monuments, designed irrigation systems, developed mathematical knowledge, and transformed entire landscapes.

The Euphrates Tunnel encourages us to ask an important question: how much ancient knowledge has been lost?

Many structures were destroyed by war, weather, rebuilding, natural disasters, and time. Others remain buried beneath modern cities or hidden under layers of earth.

The absence of evidence is not always proof that something never existed. At the same time, a fascinating story is not proof that it did.
