There are several different versions of the legend, but one of the most popular is that the Fishman was once a fisherman who drowned in the river, and was transformed into the creature as a punishment for his sins. Others believe that the Fishman is a demon who preys on unsuspecting villagers.

Despite the fact that the Fishman is considered a legend, the town of Liérganes has embraced the creature as a symbol of its heritage and identity. The Fishman can be seen in various forms throughout the town, including on the coat of arms, on street signs, and in sculptures and artwork.

In recent years, the Fishman of Liérganes has also become a popular subject in contemporary art, with several artists creating their own interpretations of the creature. The legend continues to capture the imagination of locals and visitors alike, and has become an important part of the cultural landscape of Liérganes.
